Captured Ukrainian soldiers marched through streets of Donetsk

Pro-Russian separatists have marched dozens of captured Ukrainian soldiers through the streets of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.

Hundreds of people lined the street, many calling the soldiers fascists and murderers.

Previously the Kyiv government had promised Ukrainian soldiers would hold Independence day parades in Donetsk on Sunday, assuming they would by then have taken the city from the rebels.

So the rebels say they are merely fulfilling Kyiv’s words and also celebrating their own independence as a region.

The event was also meant to recreate the forced march of nearly 60,000 German Nazi soldiers through the streets of Moscow in 1944 towards the end of World War Two.

On display in Lenin Square in the city were around 10 Ukrainian army vehicles which had been destroyed by rebels.
