James Brady, wounded in Reagan assassination attempt, dead at 73

STORY: James Brady, the former White House Press Secretary who was severely wounded in the assasanation attempt on former U.S. Presient Ronald Reagan in 1981, has died at the age of 73.

Brady's staff made the announcement on Monday (August 3).

The shooting was captured by TV cameras as President Reagan accompanied by some of his staff were leaving the Washington Hilton hotel.

Brady was shot in the head and would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchaIr.

He would go on to become an ouspoken proponent of tougher gun control laws in the U.S. and in 1994 his advocacy, with help from his wife Sarah, resulted in the so-called Brady Bill.

The law required an immediate background check for handgun purchases in the U.S.

But years after the Brady Bill became law, the Bradys said gun control had become more lax, increasing chances of mass shootings.
