Master’s Spirit: Gayageum Mastro “Ham Dong-jeong-wol”

Korean sound is deeply rooted in nature. Whenever nature changes its colors, the seasons approach each with their own shades of color and sound. Korea's sound starts from the natural materials provided by Korea's four different seasons. Artistic spirit also grows deeper through the harsh years and storms of life.

Ham Dong-jeong-wol, one of the most renowned virtuosos of the gayageum, was a great artist, but her life as a human being was so deprived. But in the end, her unyielding persistence as an artist was what drove her entire life. She strummed every string of the gayageum wholeheartedly and would not give up until she mastered the sound. This is what has made her music and her version of gayageum sanjo the best.

On Master’s Spirit of “The Sensation”, we take a look at the most famous and admired traditional Korean artist Ham Dong-jeong-wol and her life stories, and also see which aspect of her gayageum sanjo could have captured the hearts of so many artists to this day.
