In the streets of Paris, the mood is sombre.

Flags are at half mast, in memory of those killed in last week's Air Algerie plane crash in Mali.

118 people, including 54 French nationals, were killed in the disaster.

Honoring the lives lost, France has begun three days of mourning.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) PASSER-BY RAYA HRISTOVA SAYING:

"In any case, grief, you can never find ways to relieve it since it's whole families who have perished so it's very sad, and through time I hope it will be eased and that we will also better understand the circumstances."

The crash site is now the scene of an intensive investigation although it's believed that poor weather was most likely the cause.

France meanwhile, is left to grieve.
