Three large cooling towers at a disused power station in southern England were demolished in the early hours of Sunday morning (July 27) to cheers from local residents.
One-hundred-and-eighty kilograms (approximately 397 pounds) of explosives flattened the cooling towers at Didcot, Oxfordshire at 0501 local time (0401gmt) in less than a minute.
The demolition firm chose to carry out the operation at dawn on a Sunday morning due to health and safety concerns, urging people to stay away from the site and to watch the action via a live online stream instead.
But many ignored the advice, getting up early to watch the towers come down, after failing to convince the authorities to change the demolition time.
The 2,000-megawatt Didcot A coal-fired power station was closed in 2013 after more than 40 years of operation.
