A Malaysian airliner was brought down in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, killing all 295 people aboard and sharply raising the stakes in a conflict between Kiev and pro-Moscow rebels that has set Russia and the West at daggers drawn.

At a news conference at Schiphol airport on Thursday (July 17), Malaysia Airlines' European chief Huib Gorter detailed the nationalities of the passengers from flight MH17 which were known at this stage.

"Just to give you a bit of the background on nationalities, as we know at this point of time, 154 Dutch passengers were on board the aircraft, 27 Australian passengers, 23 Malaysian, 11 Indonesians, 6 from the UK, 4 from Germany, 4 from Belgium, 3 from the Philippines and one Canadian. The rest we have not yet identified the nationality," he told reporters.
