Israel accepts Gaza ceasefire deal

Israel has accepted a ceasefire that would end a week-long shelling war in Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet voted to approve Egypt’s proposal for a truce – which would bring airstrikes against the Palestinian territory to a halt.
Early reports suggest senior Hamas officials have rejected the terms of the ceasefire.
The past few hours have seen cross-border exchanges of much lower intensity.
A senior Israeli defence chief says the bombardment of Gaza has left Hamas seriously weakened.
Two nephews of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh were among almost 200 killed.
The organisation which controls Gaza has not formally responded. But its armed wing rejected the plan as a “surrender” – even though it had not seen the full text.
