Hungarian Rhapsody #2, Pt 1~1926~Philadelphia Orch~L Stokowski

Its again time for Symphonic Sundays. Part 2 of Hungarian Rhapsody #2 was previously uploaded. Perhaps I should complete the task with the lesser known Pt 1. Composed in 1847, Rhapsody #2 was part of a series of 19 rhapsodies composed by Liszt. This work was one of the earliest electrical recordings and was made November 18, 1926 at the Philadelphia Academy of Music with Leopold Stokowski leading the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. Stokowski had made acoustically produced classical recordings for Victor in the 10 years prior to the development of the electric microphone and had always been disappointed with the poor quality of those records. He worked closely with the Victor sound engineers to produce a recording that would mirror the rich sounds of a full symphony orchestra as he has done here. The music for this video was transferred from a 1926 Victrola 12 inch red label using a 1911 Victrola as player and a Canon digital camera as recorder. This record is a part of the collection of pioneer banker Gus Groos of San Antonio, Texas. Many thanks again to Mike W for allowing me to borrow and record the collection for a year so that many more can enjoy these early Victrola classical works.
