Security forces try to diffuse a bomb near Egypt's presidential palace Monday.

A police officer was killed in the same area earlier in the day in a bomb blast.

Several people were wounded.

Then a second explosion.

Another police officer is killed.

The blasts came days after the militant group Ajnad Misr, or Soldiers of Egypt, admitted to planting a series of bombs to target security forces.

The group aborted the mission fearing civilians would be hurt.

But it was unable to remove the bombs and released a statement urging caution.

Islamist militants have targeted police and soldiers with bomb attacks and shootings since the ousting of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood last year.

The Brotherhood denies any link to the violence.
