According to a recent survey of 239 women by the University of Portsmouth’s Research Group in Breast Health, 17 percent of the respondents said their breasts prevent them from doing physical activity.

The results of the survey show that the level of exercise wasn’t influenced by breast size and that the issue arose in women with different bra sizes.

Subjects said that breasts were fourth on the list of things that hold them back from physical activity, just under lack of energy, time, and health reasons.

Other things that the women said were keeping them from exercising include cost, access to facilities, clothing, not wanting to exercise alone, or feeling embarrassed about doing sports.

Emma Burnett who worked on the study is quoted as saying: “We had plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that breasts are a barrier to exercise but this is the first study to provide evidence that they're affecting women's participation in sport.”

The survey showed that women participating in the study who knew more about breast health were more physically active.

Experts recommend that women wear sports bras to prevent damaging the Cooper’s ligaments while exercising.
