Last minute talks to resume in Ukraine -Russia gas dispute as Tuesday deadline looms

Talks between Russia and Ukraine to resolve their gas dispute will resume today with Moscow’s Tuesday deadline hanging over them.

The difficult negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian energy ministers and the heads of Gazprom and Naftogas are being brokered by Brussels

If no agreement is reached over a $5.2bn. debt, deliveries to Kyiv could stop within hours.

Future prices are also being discussed. Russia has set a tariff of $485 per 1,000 cubic metres instead of a previously agreed $268. The EU has mooted a price somewhere in between.

The European Union’s interest is because it gets a third of its gas imports from Russia, almost half of which comes via Ukraine. If Gazprom turns off the taps to Kyiv the EU could also face supply disruption.
