Despite government’s claims of providing reliefs and subsidies, the latest reports suggest that the tax imposed on petroleum products is the biggest source of revenue for the government.
The government that claimed to be providing 50 paisa and 1.5 billion rupees worth subsidy earned some 74 billion rupees over the period of three months.
If petroleum products’ prices are evaluated, the government is receiving up to Rs 24 per liter tax on petrol and diesel. Some 17% General Sales Tax (GST) and 10 rupees levi tax is being charged on petrol.
