TWITTER BLOCKS "BLASPHEMOUS" TWEETS IN PAKISTAN
Last week Twitter granted the authorities` request to block certain posts that had been deemed blasphemous. The news was reported by the site “Chilling Effects” which explains the blocking of these tweets, in line with the country-specific censorship policy, is the first time the social network has agreed to withhold content in Pakistan. There has been lively reaction online …
Many have taken to the web to voice their outrage. They are appalled Twitter is now blocking Internet content in Pakistan; they say the policy is ridiculous and the powers that be at the microblogging site are violating the right to freedom of expression for web users in Pakistan. 
Some web users have shared concerns over the lack of clarity over what is considered blasphemous. The people who wrote these Twitter posts for example are asking who defines blasphemous? They fear the Pakistani government could well go on to exercise online censorship for anything it deems offensive.
Fears partly fueled by the fact this isn’t the first time Pakistan has taken steps to control online content. Web users were denied access to video sharing platform YouTube at the end of 2012. The ban, which remains in force, came after the anti-Islam film “Innocence of Muslims” was posted online.
