Indian Consulate Attacked in Afghanistan's Herat, Three Gunmen Killed

The Indian consulate in the Afghan city of Herat was attacked early Friday by four gunmen who tried to enter the complex and later fired from neighbouring buildings. Three attackers have reportedly been killed.
The assault, which began at 3.25 am, has been on for several hours. The Indian foreign ministry said all personnel are safe.
Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi has spoken to the Indian ambassador in Afghanistan and assured all help. Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said he "bolstered morale of all staff in Indian missions in Afghanistan."
At dawn, four gunmen reportedly opened fire on the consulate from a nearby house with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. One of them was shot dead while he was trying to scale the wall of the consulate.
The two other attackers were reportedly surrounded by over 150 security personnel, including soldiers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and shot.
"Our brave ITBP personnel and Afghan soldiers were successful in rebutting the attack. All Indian personnel are safe," Mr Akbaruddin said.
The choice of Herat for the attack has surprised many as the city, which lies near Afghanistan's border with Iran, is considered one of the safest in the country.

হেরাতে কর্মরত বিবিসির একজন প্রতিবেদক জানিয়েছেন, কয়েক ঘণ্টা ধরে ওই হামলা চলে। তবে এ ঘটনায় এখন পর্যন্ত হতাহতের খবর পাওয়া যায়নি। ওই এলাকাটি এখন নিরাপত্তা বাহিনী ঘিরে রেখেছে।
