India: Delhi victory parade for Modi

Narendra Modi was given a hero’s welcome on the streets of New Delhi after he secured India’s most decisive general election victory in three decades.

Arriving from his home state of Gujarat, Modi was greeted by crowds of supporters who showered him with flowers and chanted his name.

The sweeping win gives Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party a majority in parliament, ending a period of fragile coalition governments in India.

A Hindu nationalist and chief minister of Gujarat, Modi campaigned on pledges to revive the economy.

The election result was a big defeat for the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and the ruling Congress party. Manmohan Singh, of the Congress party, has tendered his resignation as prime minister.

Election turnout was an unprecedented 66 percent. With polling staggered over five weeks, a record of more half a billion votes were cast.
