Afghanistan landslide: Search for victims goes on

Search efforts for those caught up in Friday’s deadly landslide that struck the Afghan village of Aab Bareek have been ongoing. Rescuers had announced over the weekend that there was little hope of finding survivors.

The Afghan government has called the site in the Argo district of Badakhstan a ‘mass grave’. UN agencies and officials in the country have estimated that anywhere between 500 and 2700 people were killed. Four thousand people are believed to have been displaced after 300 homes were buried under up to 50 metres of earth and debris.

There have been scuffles between villagers for aid with armed militia from the area taking control of its delivery.

Survivors have been given shelter in tents erected on a hillside near the village, however authorities have said they should be moved immediately to a safer location.
