Neon Trees: New album for American Mormon rock band

American rock band “Neon Trees” are on tour to promote their new album “Pop Psychology”.

“Sleeping with a Friend” is the first single of their third studio album. The album draws heavily from the therapy sessions of lead singer Tyler Glenn.

The Neon Trees’ front man made headlines recently when he came out as gay

Glenn spoke about his cathartic sessions: “It started as kind of a therapeutic thing to do, which I think albums are for a lot of artists. For me it was a moment where I was like, it started like really dark, and I thought, you know, this might be this dark subject matter because it’s a lot about me and my identity crisis and figuring out who I am.”

The band are all “Mormons”, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Some gay Mormons are pushing the church to be more accepting and compassionate.

But church leaders still oppose gay marriage and maintain that homosexuality is a sin.

Despite the Mormon Church’s reaction to him coming out, Glenn is still optimistic:
“I’m not going to fault some church members who have a different thought. Like, I’m not going to throw away that faith because maybe they haven’t progressed or gotten to the point where they fully understand it yet. Because I do kind of foresee a moment, I know it’s slow, but I do foresee a moment in the church when there will be acceptance.”

He also cleared up the question mark over possible changes to the band: “And I also was really clear to my bandmates, you know, we’re not a gay band all of a sudden. This doesn’t typecast us. I’m a gay man and it’s fine, and our show’s not going to become a gay show.”

“Pop Psychology” is out now and the American alternative rock band is on tour in North America and Canada and plan to hit Europe in September.
