Paul Ramsay, the founder of a major health-care provider and operator of private hospitals in numerous countries, passed away at the age of 78 following a brief illness brought on by a recent heart attack.

Ramsay left behind billions of dollars that he accumulated over his life. The fruits of his hard labor didn’t go to relatives though. Instead, about $3 billion will be going straight to his charitable organization.

He is the founder of Ramsay Health Care, which first launched in Sydney, Australia in 1964. Over the years, his company turned into a highly successful empire, as it later became the operator of approximately 150 health-care centers around the world.

Ramsay had a 36.2 percent company holding, which made his net worth about $3.2 billion.

Those billions will be handed over to The Paul Ramsay Foundation. The company said that the charity ‘will receive the benefit of the vast majority of his controlling shareholding in Ramsay Health Care Limited, which will largely be retained on trust for the Foundation.’

That will now make the foundation one of the wealthiest charities in Australia. Ramsay, who never married and had no children, was listed by Forbes as the ninth-richest person in his home country.
