Yemeni army in heavy fighting; six soldiers die in suicide blast

A suicide bomber in Yemen killed several soldiers at their military outpost in the south.

This attack in Shabwa is in one of two provinces where the army has been fighting al-Qaeda and its allies.

The latest blast comes shortly after Yemen reported its security forces killed 37 suspected al-Qaeda militants in an offensive in the same province.

Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula overruns much of southern Yemen.

Fighters moved to the area when their training bases were shut down in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Western countries fear further destabilisation in Yemen could result in more plots to strike international targets.

The number of attacks has risen sharply since Yemen's U.S. backed army launched a major campaign against al-Qaeda last week.
