Afghanistan landslide: search for survivors continues, but hopes fade

A day after a huge landslide in the northern Afghan province of Badakhshan, local residents continue to dig through the rubble to search for survivors.

But hope is fading of finding anyone alive amongst the rock and mud, which is 30 metres deep in places.

A spokesman for the Badakhshan provincial governor told reporters that 2,100 people had been trapped that all were believed to have died.

A local man, who helped to retrieve several bodies, told reporters, “I urge the government to come and help take the bodies out.”

Relief efforts are now focused on helping more than 4,000 displaced people. The UN is sending emergency supplies of water, food and medical care.
