Thought to be the one of the rarest and ugliest sharks, this particular one was pretty big, measuring 18 feet in length. Only a few specimens of goblin sharks have ever been caught, which explains why they are so unique.
However the bottom-dwelling sharks have been spotted all over the place. France, Portugal, South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. are only a few locations they’ve been seen.
What sets goblin sharks apart from other species is their appearance. As the name goblin implies, they’re not very attractive. They have beady eyes, elongated and flattened snouts and long heads.
Goblin sharks have slender, tiny teeth that protrude outward, giving them an angry, monster-like look. As for the Florida Keys shark, it was released a short time after its capture and reportedly swam back out to sea.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration posted about the discovery on their Facebook page and noted ‘Biologists encourage people to call and report these rare sightings and catches as the information they can collect allows them to know more about a species.’
