A series of powerful tornadoes brought death and destruction to southern and central parts of the United States.

At least seven people were killed in Arkansas and Oklahoma as the storms hit on Sunday.

Many more have been injured.

These were the scenes in the Oklahoma town of Quapaw just over 300 kilometres east of Oklahoma City.

Dozens of homes and other buildings have been destroyed.

Trees and power lines have also been brought down

Search and rescue teams are sifting through the debris for anyone who might be trapped underneath.

Tornadoes were also reported in parts of Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri where they caused damage but there've been no reports of injuries.
