Pope Francis is elated as he waves to the masses who rejoice after he names two of his predecessors, saints.

Pope Francis enrolled John XXIII and John Paul II "among the saints."

For those in St. Peter's Square, it was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

"It's just magnificent, I think it is really important to be here. It's the first time I'm here, it's incredible."

The ceremony overflowed into the streets as far back as the Tiber River.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH STUDENT, FRANCOIS, SAYING:

"I don't have the words to explain, it's something very, very impressive for me and very beautiful."

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ARGENTINIAN PILGRIM, LEONARDO RUINO, SAYING:

"I think that they were two great people, each of them had their own particular character, so they deserve what is happening."

The historic double-canonization involved four popes in one ceremony.
