Hundreds massacred in South Sudan

United Nations officials say rebel troops have slaughtered hundreds of civilians in the oil city of Bentiu.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) Toby Lanzer, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General, Saying:

"During the past few days, Bentiu was the scene of severe violence, very targeted deliberate violence that struck individuals of certain identities. And I think that what I have so far seen in the Mosque and other parts of town is really been very very heart wrenching, certainly atrocities have been committed here on very significant scale."

More than a million people have fled their homes since fighting erupted in December.

The conflict pits troops backing President Salva Kiir against soldiers loyal to his sacked vice president Riek Machar.
