Pilgrimage for Pope John Paul II's canonization begins in Poland

The start of a more than thousand mile journey to honor Pope John Paul the second.

The journey begins in Poland and will end in Rome at the end of April when the Polish-born Pope will become a saint.

A group of Knights Brotherhood pilgrims are traveling by horseback and horse-drawn carriages, reviving a medieval order and costumes out of reverence for Pope John Paul the second.

(SOUNDBITE) (Polish) PILGRIM FROM SZTUM TOWN, ANDRZEJ JOZEF PODOLSKI SAYING:

"We wanted to celebrate the ceremony in the Vatican by riding there on horseback. We are the only group in Europe that will go there on horses. Other groups run, ride bicycles, drive cars. We ride horses."

It's a matter of pride.

"We are riding there to pay tribute to our great Pole, because he was great and in our hearts always will be great."
