Tragically, a man walking in Abington Township, Pennsylvania was recently struck and killed by a SEPTA train. The victim, 20-year-old Andre Washington had been walking along the train tracks at a little before 4:30 in the afternoon at the time of the fatal incident.

Washington was on his way to a local Wawa convenience store to meet a friend but he never made it there. Police claim the victim was texting a friend on his iPod as the train was approaching.

The engineer later said he saw Washington on the tracks ahead of time and sounded the horn as a warning. He locked the brakes but there just wasn’t enough time to stop and Washington never once turned around despite the loud horn.

According to the engineer, it didn’t appear as though Washington even saw or noticed the train approaching. Authorities immediately responded to the scene and Washington was pronounced dead right away.

Roughly 500 passengers were onboard at the time Washington was killed. Shuttle buses arrived to transport them away from the scene. Train service on the West Trenton Line was halted for about two hours, while police gathered evidence and wrapped up their investigation.
