An Indian naval officer was killed in an engine room malfunction on Friday afternoon (March 7) aboard the INS Kolkata, a warship that is under construction at the Mazagon dock in Mumbai.

An officer and several Mazagon dock workers were performing machinery trials when a valve on top of a carbon dioxide cylinder popped off, striking the officer in the chest. The officer was reportedly killed by the gas leak. Several workers were injured.

In a statement, the Indian navy said that the ship, "being built by Mazagon Dockyard Limited (MDL), while undergoing machinery trials, had a malfunction in its Carbon Dioxide unit, leading to gas leakage. One naval officer and some MDL personnel were affected and have been hospitalised."

Last week, two naval officers were killed in a fire onboard the Indian navy submarine INS Sindhuratna, which was being tested at sea. Navy chief admiral DK Joshi resigned following the incident. Some 11 Indian naval accidents have been recorded in the past eight months.

The INS Kolkata is one of the most advanced vessels made in India, fitted with state of the art weaponry and sensors.
