University students clash with riot police in Venezuela

University students clashed with riot policemen on Thursday (April 3) after two months of political unrest that has killed 39 people.

Policemen used tear gas to disperse students from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).

Protesters have been on the streets since early February calling for President Nicolas Maduro's resignation and complaining about a litany of problems from rampant crime to food shortages.

Students had gathered at university premises and wanted to march to Economy Ministry offices but were repressed by the police, who also used rubber bullets and water sprayed from tanks.

Students threw back gas bombs and fire crackers at police.

Two students and a cameraman were reported injured during the melee, local media reported.

The 39 fatalities have included government supporters, protesters and members of security forces.
