Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry meet in Paris

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived at the Russian Ambassador’s residence in Paris ahead of talks.

It’s understood the proposals the two will try and develop include the deployment of international monitors in Ukraine, a withdrawal of Russian forces from Crimea and the border zone around Ukraine while they will also look to launch direct talks between Moscow and the government in Kyiv.

The hastily arranged meeting between Lavrov and Kerry in Paris came after a telephone conversation between President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.

The discussions took place as the Pentagon announced one of their top Generals – Philip Breedlove was sent back early to Europe from a visit to Washington. It was described as a “prudent” act given what the Pentagon said was a “lack of transparency” over Russian troop movements.
