Bursts of color explode near the Kremlin - as Russians welcome the annexation of Crimea.

Earlier in the day Russian President Vladimir Putin signed laws completing Russia's union with the region.

And these Moscow residents couldn't be more pleased:

"Crimea has shown us what it means to love the land we live in. This is very important. They reminded us what was the most important thing all those last 20 years."

In Crimea's capital, thousands of Russians celebrated in much the same way.

This couple thanked Putin and the Crimean president.

There were cries of joy, and plenty of cheers from the crowd.

A referendum last Sunday overwhelmingly backed Crimea's union with Russia, but is denounced by Washington and the European Union.
