Snake Visits Chicken Coop, Eats Golf Balls Instead of Eggs

A grey rat snake, found in a chicken coop in Georgia, chose two golf balls for a quick snack.
Snakes don’t appear to be overly picky when it comes to forms of food. In one recent case, a grey rat snake chose two golf balls for a quick snack.
The female snake was found in a chicken coop in Georgia. It soon landed in the care of veterinarians at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island.
The vets discovered golf balls in the snake’s stomach. They suspect she mistook the balls for chicken eggs.
Surgery to remove the balls was a necessity, because there was no way for them to pass through her system and she would have died. Veterinarians successfully carried out what they called a ‘delicate operation’.
Staffers at the center posted about the bizarre ordeal on Facebook. They elaborated on the process noting ‘Dr. Norton and Dr. Cassle had to be sure to keep the incision site very clean and flushed out. They also had to make sure each layer of the stomach, body cavity lining, and skin were sutured closed. The snake has been started on antibiotics and we are hoping she will recover quickly!’ (2)
It remains unclear when and where the center will release the ball eating snake.
