A woman in Oak Creek, Wisconsin shockingly discovered grenades in her attic. Caroline Cyganiak had been doing a little Spring cleaning when she opened up a box filled with war mementos from her late husband.

While rifling through his belongings, she noticed four active grenades. She immediately notified police who responded to the home and then got in touch with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office for their Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit.

The bomb squad soon determined the 40-year-old grenades were in unstable condition. They were quickly removed from the home. According to police, the grenades were disposed of right away at a local remote location.

The explosives were detonated shortly before 10 in the morning. No one was injured, but roughly 40 residents heard or felt the blasts and contacted law enforcement.

Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards is grateful for the happy ending and commented “I’m sure it would have damaged that house extensively and probably injured anyone within a radius. That’s what they’re meant to do. They are weapons of war. They are meant to kill with fragments.”

After the terrifying attic discovery, Cyganiak said she went to the cemetery and ‘reamed her husband out’.
