South Korea college building collapses, at least nine dead

Dozens of college students in South Korea are feared dead after a building collapse in the southeastern city of Gyeongju at around 9:15 p.m. on February 17th

A pre-fab building used as auditorium collapsed in South Korea's Gyeongju City Monday night. Over 500 South Korean college students were attending an orientation concert in the building late Monday evening when the roof suddenly collapsed.

Witnesses say it took less than 10 seconds for the roof to cave in, and some students were reportedly trampled in the panic.

Of the over 500 people inside, at least 70 were hurt and rescuers continued to search for buried victims throughout the night.

Reuters confirmed nine fatalities, but the number is expected to rise as some of the injured are reportedly in serious condition.

Rescues said heavy snowfall hampered the rescue efforts as heavy lifting equipment was finding it hard to makes its way up the hill where the building is located.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said the students were from the Busan University of Foreign Studies Department and were taking part in a an orientation event that included a concert in the building located in Gyeongju, a city some 370 kilometers south of the capital Seoul.

Yonhap reports that around 70 students have been transferred to nearby hospitals and over 300 firefighters and police officers are searching for survivors, but reports say the heavy snowfall has made the rescue process difficult.
