Tokyo-area teen arrested and charged over death of 75-year-old

A Tokyo-area high school student was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of inflicting bodily harm that resulted in the death of an elderly man. The student, aged 17, had reportedly been drinking with friends at a local gastropub in Akishima, near Tokyo late one night in September.

An elderly man nearby them allegedly was so inebriated that at one point during the night, he slumped onto the street. The 75-year-old next began to pick a fight and began to argue with the teen, according to the student's account.

The boy responded by pushing aside the elderly man, who fell and hit his head badly, causing a brain contusion. The man was sent to a nearby hospital, but never fully recovered and was pronounced dead the next month. The teen has maintained his innocence, claiming the elderly man was looking to pick a fight and quarrel with him.
