A deadly attack on an opposition rally in eastern Thailand.

Food, shattered glass, and blood can be seen on the ground at this night market in the Khao Saming district of Trat province.

Gunmen threw explosives and shot at anti-government demonstrators, killing a five-year-old girl and wounding dozens of other people late on Saturday.

It's feared the number of dead will rise.

One witness said people were just about to leave, as the rally was almost finished.

"They were about to go back. I also almost went back."

The demonstrators want Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign to make way for an appointed interim government. She has refused.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

But tensions across Thailand have escalated since a wave of anti-government protests began in November.
