New Zealand marks third anniversary of quake

Two minutes of silence to commmorate the 185 people who were killed in an earthquake that devastated the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

With tears and smiles, friends and family gathered to mark the three year anniversary.

The city's mayor gave a eulogy in the Botanic gardens.

. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRISTCHURCH MAYOR LIANNE DALZIEL, SAYING (PART OVERLAID):

"I'm not sure that we know all the stories yet, but we know that some died heroes reaching out to save others."

Residents were still trying to come to terms with their loss.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRISTCHURCH RESIDENT PETER BROWN, SAYING:

"You think it's better each year and then someone asks a question about an individual and then all of a sudden you realise it doesn't go away."

On February 22, 2011, much of Christchurch was destroyed when the deadly 6.5 magnitude quake hit.

More than 6500 people were injured.
