Ukraine: Yanukovych reaches deal to end crisis, France urges caution

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said a deal to resolve his country’s political crisis has been reached with opposition leaders after days of bloodshed.

The Ukrainian presidential press service said the agreement would be signed today but gave no details on what the deal would include.

France urged caution, though: French foreign minister Laurent Fabius, who is involved in mediation attempts, said opposition leaders still need time to talk.

What he called a “difficult night” of negotiations were mediated by visiting European Union foreign ministers from Poland, Germany and France.

Russia has made clear it wants Yanukovich to impose order if he wants to keep benefiting from Moscow’s financial support.

In further diplomatic efforts, US President Barack Obama has been speaking with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She had previously discussed the situation in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Yanukovych appears to be losing support in parliament: the assembly adopted a resolution late on Thursday urging authorities to stop shooting and withdraw police from the centre of Kyiv.
