Ukrainian police used water cannons on Tuesday (February 18) to disperse protesters on the edge of the Kiev square the protesters have occupied.

Anti-government protesters were seen hurling petrol bombs, fireworks and stones at riot police and igniting piles of tyres and wood to block officers entering Independence Square.

Nine people died during clashes in Kiev on Tuesday, including seven civilians and two policemen, the police said.

This was the worst day of violence since demonstrations erupted against President Viktor Yanukovich 12 weeks ago.

Western powers warned Yanukovich against trying to smash the pro-European demonstrations, and opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko, fearing an assault, urged women and children to leave Kiev's central square "to avoid further victims".
