Man dies as 100mph winds batter UK

Hurricane-force winds and pelting rain are battering parts of the UK, that is already struggline to cope with record floods.

A pensioner died trying to shift a tree felled by powerful winds.

Winds of up to 160 kmph caused damage and destruction on the roads in the northwest.

The highest alert level has been issued for winds in Wales and northwest England. That comes on top of 16 severe flood warnings already in place.

Parts of southwest England have been submerged for weeks.

Water swept through flood defences leaving properties and gardens flooded.
