Mass graves found in Mexico's Michoacan state

Mexican police are trying to confirm when 19 bodies were dumped in this small Mexican munincipality of Tinquindin.

They are the latest gruesome discovery in the troubled Michoacan state.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SECURITY OFFICIAL, MONTE ALEJANDRO RUBIDO, SAYING:

"Without any gunshots, federal forces detained today 19 suspects responsible for these criminal acts. Nine of the detainees were arrested in Michoacan and the ten remaining in the State of Mexico."

Drugs, weapons and communication equipment were also seized.

In nearby Zacan, the severed heads of four men were discovered by residents, close to a church.

They were wrapped in rubbish bags and accompanied by a threatening note.

Police are investigating whether these remains are linked to the mass grave.
