Fatal shooting at Moscow school rattles nerves ahead of Sochi Games

Rattled nerves outside this Moscow high school on Monday.

That's where a student shot dead a teacher and a policeman and held 20 students hostage inside a classroom for two hours.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT, SAYING:

"Everything was fast, there was panic."

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SCHOOL 263 STUDENT, DARIA, SAYING:

"We were told immediately to move away from the windows, then everybody was led out into the corridor. We and all kids from our school were led into the performance hall. Everybody was crying.

The suspect was eventually subdued by hostage negotiators and detained.

Local media say the shooting may have been a revenge attack on a teacher.

Officials haven't formally identified the shooter but students and teachers described him to reporters as a top performing pupil.

This mother read a text message sent by her daughter during the shooting.
