Wolverine Blues De Paris 1960

Wilbur De Paris and his New New Orleans Jazz Band at the Juan les Pins jazz festival in France on July 10 1960.
Wolverine Blues is another Morton composition. Jelly recorded this first on July 18 1923 as a piano solo and again with his Red Hot Peppers on June 10 1927 in a session done a week after he recorded "the Pearls." Again the De Paris tempo is substantally slower ( 126 BPM) than the morton tempos ( 165 BMP's in 1923 and even 240 BMP's in 1927).
I recorded this tune with the Climax Jazz Band. Personally I felt very comfortable with the 216 BPM.
If we had played it much slower we would not have been able to give it our feel of swing.
I have deep respect for Wilbur De Paris and his guys who still swinging kept this slow beat going.
