Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has met with opposition party leaders in Kyiv, including former boxer Vitaly Klitschko, in an attempt to end the political crisis and violent unrest in Ukraine.

The new round of talks, along with Yanukovych calling an emergency session of parliament on Tuesday, is being seen as a sign that the president may be willing to soften his hardline stance and strike a compromise.

However, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland dismissed early presidential elections to resolve the standoff.

“Acting against us are not opposition activists, but rebels. One should distinguish this,” said the prime minister. “A real coup d’etat attempt is currently under way, and all those who support this coup should clearly state: yes, we are in favour of the overthrow of the legitimate government of Ukraine,” Azarov added.

Meanwhile, Stefan Fule, the EU Enlargement Commissioner is expected to arrive in Kiev this weekend.

Fule had been leading efforts to strengthen ties with Ukraine through new political and trade agreements.
