Fire in Australia's New South Wales threatens homes

Authorities issued an emergency warning for a fire burning out of control in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) on Sunday (January 19), advising residents to leave the area.

Fire-fighters battled the flames and tried to save properties as the fire moved towards Carabost, a town located about half way between Sydney and Melbourne.

The fire had burned an area as large as 8,000 hectares by Sunday afternoon, the NSW Rural Fire Service said in a written statement, adding that it was "burning quickly and erratically".

Fire crews confirmed that at least three homes had been lost. However, the number could rise as they continue to assess further losses in the area.

Extreme heat and high winds have fanned dozens of bushfires across Australia for the past few days, forcing hundreds to flee their homes in some of the worst conditions seen since Black Saturday in 2009.

Milder temperatures brought relief to the states of South Australia and Victoria on Sunda
