In this guitar lesson, Jon MacLennan will teach you a cool basic country rhythm pattern or comping in the style of Chet Atkins. So if you would like to start with comping in country guitar this is the right lesson.
Ok, so... What is comping? It is a term used in jazz music to describe the chords, rhythms, and countermelodies that keyboard players or guitar players use to support a jazz musician's improvised solo or melody lines.
As the title says, this guitar rhythm pattern is in the style of Chet Atkins, so if you have never heard about him I really recommend you to check out. Atkins was an American guitarist and record producer who, along with Owen Bradley, created the smoother country music style known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country's appeal to adult pop music fans as well. I also recommend you to check out great country guitar players like Albert Lee, Danny Gatton, Scotty Moore, Brent Mason, etc.
Alright, the example of today´s lesson is a guitar rhythm idea with some basic dominant chords, such as E7, A7, D7 and G7 with muting technique. Notice how I am changing the bass notes with the roots and the 5th notes, pretty basic stuff but very used in country music!
And don´t forget to come up with your own ideas, which is the best advice for starting to find `your´ unique sound and style.
That is all for today... Anyway I suggest that you keep enjoying and learning from Jon MacLennan and all the staff of Guitarcontrol.com! Where? In our free guitar lessons at www.youtube.com/guitarcontrol
