Not everyone has crazy Christmas decorating talents. City officials in Geelong, Australia are now complaining about a Christmas tree installation that, well, didn’t quite meet expectations.

Mayor Darryn Lyons isn’t too happy with the display. He bluntly stated “It's a disgrace. It's the worst Christmas tree in the world…. I am working on a number of different plans and we will be working with a Melbourne-based company.”

The tree is bright red and it doesn’t have any needles, fake or otherwise. As for the ornaments, they’re painted on in one-dimensional exhibits. Installed outside a local mall, many residents laughed at the utter lack of creativity.

Others complained about the ugliness. A small minority however does think that it is modern, trendy and should be embraced.

The part that really can’t be laughed at is the fact that it costs taxpayers an astounding $30,000. Although it was pointed out the holiday decorating budget was not plentiful this year, it’s hard to believe the installation could cost 30 grand.

Despite the controversy, one thing is sure, the holiday tree has given Geelong some publicity and may attract some additional tourism for the season, even if the reason for the visits is only for a good chuckle.
