Two people were injured after a U.S. Navy helicopter made an emergency landing south of Tokyo on Monday (December 16) and turned onto its side, local media said.

Footage from Japanese broadcaster TV Tokyo showed a helicopter lying in an open area of Miura City, about 80 kilometres south of Tokyo.

The Kyodo news agency reported two of the helicopter's four-member air crew were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, one suffering bruising and the other a broken leg.

The helicopter attempted the landing in an area of reclaimed land several hundred metres from the nearest residential area after pilots appeared to lose control of the aircraft, Kyodo said.
