Massive fire destroys tire store in Peru, injures several

A large fire ripped through a five-story tire store in Peru on Tuesday (December 10) morning, injuring many and forcing the evacuation of nearby homes and businesses.

According to Peru daily El Comercio, the fire started on the third floor at 9:30 a.m. (1430GMT) before it quickly spread throughout the building. Some 150 firefighters from 40 different units in the area were deployed to the site to battle strong flames amid fears the fire would spread across the the Lima district of La Victoria.

Tires inside fueled the large flames, setting off chemical bombs inside and sending out thick black smoke high in the air that could be seen for miles around.

The intense heat of the fire inside the store had complicated efforts by firefighters to bring the large fire under control.
