Karzai, Rouhani meet in Tehran

STORY: Afghanistan's president, Hamid Karzai, arrived in Tehran on Sunday to meet with Iranian president Hassan Rouhani, reportedly for a one day trip to discuss regional issues.

After being greeted by Iranian officials on his arrival, Karzai was driven to meet Rouhani, where he met the Iranian president before the pair inspected a military guard and sat down for talks with their respective delegations.

The meeting came shortly after U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel visited Kabul on Saturday where he said a NATO meeting in February could become a new deadline for a security pact between the United States and Afghanistan, a deal which Karzai has been reluctant to sign.

Hagel arrived in Afghanistan to visit troops and senior Afghan officials but, unusually, did not plan to meet Karzai, who has resisted signing the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) which would govern the U.S. military presence after most NATO forces leave by the
