Islamist rebels seize oil field in Syria

Celebration in Syria -- as amateur video appears to show Islamist rebels capturing a major oil field in the country's east.

The raid cuts off access to some of Syria's local crude reserves and could force the government to rely only on imported oil.

The storming of the al-Omar oil field began overnight in the Deir al-Zor region.

The oil field sits east of the Euphrates River, in a region bordering Iraq.

This rebel move included divisions of four different Islamist groups, according to the video.

Reuters cannot independently verify the video, which was obtained from a social media website.

It's not yet clear how much the loss of the oil field would affect the government or its battlefield abilities.
